Program

Professionals and family caregivers can benefit from the second annual dementia care education and training academy. The Academy will feature experts presenting state-of-the-art practical and effective ways for providing high quality dementia care. Academy experts will explore treatments and skills, ethical issues and environmental design. Academy participants can earn continuing education units (CEUs).

You should consider participating in the Academy if you are a family caregiver, a social service or health care professional, a long-term care administrator or if you interact on a regular basis with people living with dementia.

The ABCs of Assessment

Diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease is a matter of answering three basic questions: (1) Is memory loss present? (2) What could be causing it? And (3) Are the symptoms consistent with Alzheimer's disease? This session will identify baseline and ongoing tests to determine a diagnosis of dementia and to record its progression.

Introduction to Therapeutic Touch

Therapeutic Touch is an intentionally directed process of energy exchange between practitioner and the client. The practitioner's hands are used as a focus to facilitate the healing process. It is non-toxic, non-invasive and has no adverse side effects. Therapeutic Touch is a contemporary interpretation of ancient healing practices for the purpose of helping to heal another person. However, Therapeutic Touch does not focus on the physical body but rather it interacts in a person's energy field.

"One size does not fit all" when caring for people with cognitive impairments. This session reviews symptoms and describes clinical characteristics and care for people with dementia who do not fit the Alzheimer's profile. Bathing Without a Battle

Bath time can be extremely distressing to older persons with dementia, leading to resistiveness, aggression and other disruptive behaviors. Encountering these behaviors is also distressing to caregivers whose responsibility is to maintain hygiene. Solving these bathing challenges requires an individualized, psychosocial approach. This session will focus on steps to decrease these problem behaviors while preserving the person's privacy and dignity.
