Chapter Helps Shape Legislative Outcome in Richmond
36 bills and resolutions supported by the Alzheimer's Association, Northern Virginia Chapter were approved by the Virginia General Assembly and Governor Jim Gilmore. Highlights include:
- Health insurances must provide coverage for hospice care in accident and sickness subscription contracts.
- Nursing homes are required to fully inform patients of Health Care Financing Administration survey and inspection findings.
- Nursing aide education programs must be a minimum of 120 hours to prepare nurse aides for certification.
- Individuals who add certain features to their homes to increase accessibility to the disabled are eligible for an income tax credit.
- The Joint Commission on Health Care (JCHC) will review staffing guidelines for nursing homes and adult care residences to determine effectiveness in protecting the health, safety and welfare of residents. JCHC also will conduct a study to determine the effectiveness of providing additional protections to vulnerable adults.
- A $500 grant is authorized for individuals with an adjusted gross income between $5,000 and $50,000 who provide unreimbursed care to a relative requiring assistance with two or more activities of daily living.
- The Comissioner of the Department of Social Services may issue licenses or renewals for adult care residences for periods of six months, one year, two years or three years (each requiring at least one announced and one unannounced inspection).
- The last week in May is officially the "Week of the Long-Term Caregiver."
