In 1998, the Alzheimer�s Association, Northern Virginia Chapter, and the Arlington Health Foundation joined together to assess the needs of both early stage diagnosed persons and caregivers during the early stage of diagnosis, mid stage, end stage and post stage. This assessment compiled information about the needs of caregivers, and developed recommendations to distribute throughout the long-term care community that will enhance the support of the families and caregivers so they can provide a better quality of care to the diagnosed individual.

Information gained from assessing needs of those in early-stage dementia should lead the way to developing programs and services to meet their specific needs. According to Anthony Sudler, Chapter Executive Director, "many early-stage individuals continue to have vital roles in the community; our goal is to develop programs and services to assist them in their efforts to maintain active lifestyles for as long as possible."

The Needs Assessment project was led by Karen Love, founder of Pathways To Care and a long-time Alzheimer�s advocate, and Mary Corcoran, Ph.D., OTR/L, FAOTA, Associate Research Professor at George Washington University. These coordinators worked closely with Chapter staff and a volunteer advisory team to ensure this project�s success.
