We want to make the Tour de Canal as enjoyable and safe as possible for all riders and volunteers.  We have just a few rules designed to make this a pleasant experience for all.

Helmets are Required--No exceptions!
An ANSI or Snell approved bicycle helmet must be worn by ALL participants at all times while riding during this event.

Park Service Regulations for Bikes

  • 15 MPH maximum speed on the towpath.
  • Stay to the right except when passing.
  • Ride single file.
  • Sound-producing devices (bells or horns) are required and must be sounded when approaching within 100 feet of others on the trail.
  • Yield right-of-way to all pedestrians and horses.
  • Helmets are required in accordance with local county ordinances.

Respect the Park
The C&O Canal is a National Historic Park operated by the US National Park Service.  As guests in the park, all Tour de Canal participants must respect the park and observe all Park Service rules and regulations.

Under the guidelines of the "Trash Free park" program, since 1999 all trash receptacles have been removed from the C&O Canal National Historic Park.  Visitors are required to take their refuse when they depart - leaving an unspoiled, trash free park!  This initiative encompassed all recreation sections including the day use, picnic grounds, pavilions, boat ramps, hiker/biker and camping areas.

Share the Trail
The C&O Canal towpath is a multi-use trail.  While you may ride many miles in solitude, some sections of the trail are heavily used, particularly in the Washington metro area, between Great Falls and Georgetown.  But anywhere along the canal expect to encounter other bikers, hikers, horses, runners, families, and maybe even a mule-drawn canal boat!  Be courteous and respect their right to use the trail, too.

Sound a warning when overtaking anyone on the trail.  Be especially careful when passing a party with small children or pets, as they can dart unexpectedly in front of you.

This is not a race
The Tour de Canal is an endurance event.  It is not a race.  Park Service regulations prohibit competitive events on the C&O Canal trail, as this can endanger other users of the park.  Please do not approach the Tour de Canal as a race.

Plan for participation of children.
Persons under the age of 18 are not permitted to ride without a responsible adult riding with them.  Please plan accordingly.
Note: Children 10 and under on the one-day 10-mile ride ride and eat free.
