alz palz

a community oriented program sponsored by the Northern Virginia Alzheimers Association for teens and "near teens" living with Alzheimers disease in their lives.

Why Alz-Palz?

There are more than 35,000 families affected by Alzheimers Disease in Northern Virginia. This figure is projected to double by the year 2005. To help the next generation of caregivers (todays teens) prepare for and understand Alzheimers disease, the Northern Virginia Chapter has created Alz-Palz, Youth Against Alzheimers Disease.

Many young people are helping to care for family members and loved ones on a daily basis and the adult world is unable to fully understand what it is like to be a teenager and a caregiver at the same time. Sometimes a teen just wants to talk to other teens.

What We Do

Alz-Palz is dedicated to ensuring that teenage caregivers are given the opportunity to communicate their needs and concerns among themselves. The group will also create awareness about Alzheimers disease throughout the community, while planning fun get-togethers for all involved.

What is Alzheimers Disease?

Alzheimers disease (AD) is a degenerative disease that attacks the brain and results in impaired memory, thinking and behavior. A person with AD may experience confusion and personality changes, have difficulty finding words, finishing thoughts, or following directions. They may get lost going to familiar places and may not recognize family and friends. Although AD generally affects people over 65, it is not a normal part of aging.
