Special Thanks to St. Mary's, Maryland Chapter of the National Association of Retired Federal EmployeesOur thanks to the St. Mary's, Maryland Chapter 969 of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees (NARFE). Each August, this chapter organizes a countywide fund drive to benefit the Alzheimer's Association. This year, over 100 NARFE members will be collecting donations in front of area stores, with a goal to surpass last year's total of almost $5,000. In 2000, the St. Mary's County Chapter received special recognition for its work at NARFE's national convention, where the Chapter presented a check for $7,500 for Alzheimer's research. Over the past ten years, this Chapter has raised over $50,000 for Alzheimer's programs. Hats off to this committed group and their leaders!

Southern Maryland Caregivers Conference A SuccessThe 9th Annual Southern Maryland Caregivers Conference, sponsored by the University of Maryland (Baltimore) Geriatrics and Gerontology Education and Research Program in cooperation with the Charles County Department of Community Services, Aging Division and 11 other agencies/organizations, was held in April at the Clark Senior Center in La Plata, MD. This day-long conference, featuring a keynote presentation, workshops and exhibits offering the latest on current and future caregiving needs, provided over 200 participants with information about the services available through public agencies and private organizations (including the Alzheimer's Association, National Capital Area) serving southern Maryland's older adults and their caregiving families. Keynote speaker Michael Splaine, Director of the Advocacy Program in Rural Initiatives at the national Alzheimer's Association, offered suggestions on how to be a better citizen advocate, cited several examples of individual advocacy resulting in public policy changes and strongly encouraged participants to continue their advocacy efforts. The 10th Annual Caregivers Conference is scheduled for April 2002 in St. Mary's County. Watch this newsletter for more detailed information.
