Memory impaired adults are at risk for heat related illness
Here are some tips to protect your loved one this summer!!!
- Monitor thermostats. Your loved one may keep the heat turned on or forget to use the air conditioning.
- Watch for inappropriate layering of clothing.
- Provide sunscreen, a hat, and loose-fitting, lightweight clothing for outdoor activities.
- Encourage extra fluids. The person with Alzheimer's or a related dementia may not experience normal thirst.
- Monitor fluid intake, especially if the person takes diuretics.
- Avoid use of caffienated drinks.
- Be aware that certain drugs cause increased sun sensitivity.
- Prevent wandering and enroll in the Safe Return Program. Exposure during peak sun (10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.) can lead to heat exhaustion or heatstroke
